Catalyte is changing the way the world discovers, develops and deploys talent. For 20+ years, Catalyte has provided opportunities for anybody, regardless of background, to launch new careers. Our apprenticeships deliver life-changing opportunities for individuals. Our apprentices deliver organizational-changing value to our clients.

When was Catalyte founded?
Catalyte was founded in 2000.

Where is Catalyte located?
Our headquarters are in Baltimore, but our talent is located across the country.

Why does Catalyte exist?
There are talent shortages everywhere. Most organizations aren’t using data and technology to modernize hiring practices. They continue to use outdated processes that focus on pedigree over job skills and aptitude. By using a scalable data-driven approach to tap into and train the largest possible talent pool, employers can easily hire great talent, satisfy customers, grow revenue, reduce costs and diversify their workforces.

Using this approach also allows previously overlooked individuals an equal opportunity to put their aptitude and attitude to work, launching new, well-paying, successful careers.

How does Catalyte create a more diverse workforce?
Our screening and talent selection process strips away layers of potential bias – names, ages, location, education, prior work experience – to discover a person’s true aptitude and attitude for success. By removing these systemic barriers, we can find and develop top talent, regardless of demographics. This creates an American workforce that looks like America.

Who has Catalyte worked with?
We work with Fortune 100 companies, SMBs, government agencies and everyone in between. Any organization that needs quality talent can benefit from Catalyte. You can see a selection of our client success stories here.

Solutions

Application development

How can  you help with application architecture?

Application architecture starts with a thorough understanding of unique requirements for rules, use cases, budget, scalability, user base, data security, longevity, availability and maintainability. Each of these affect how we design and develop applications. We carefully select tech stack, platform, services, data structures and user interfaces to meet application requirements, ensuring that we deliver a purpose-built and right-sized product.

How important is user experience in application development?

Application design should start and end with user experience. Simple UX decisions can have a profound impact on user adoption, satisfaction, quality of life, accessibility and stickiness.

To support the optimal user experience, we leverage tools and techniques such as user interviews, field studies, competitive analysis, heuristic evaluation, personas, user stories, journey mapping, wire-framing, prototyping, usability testing, A/B testing and iterative design sprints to help clients achieve their unique business goals. By fusing design thinking – mixing creativity with technical knowledge – into the entire application development process we create outcomes that delights users.

Do you do mobile application development?

Catalyte has the technical expertise and creative resources to build custom mobile applications for web, iOS and Android, extending your reach to your customers. We understand the design decisions and UX concerns that can make or break a mobile experience, and how best to build and leverage back end services without disrupting the front end. Our established practices and understanding of app store deployment and review process ensure a successful and timely launch and support ongoing release management.

Can we do analytics from our application?

Data can’t be an afterthought in application development. We design and build applications with an understanding of data types, reporting and analytics that are critical to the application’s success. We start by uncovering the questions we want to answer, and work backwards to determine how best to obtain that data that will answer those questions without being a burden or privacy risk for users.

Whether it’s understanding how user demographics affect content preferences, predicting usage spikes based on historical patterns or how external forces and events can affect application usage and purchasing patterns, we will help you establish and implement a data strategy that leads to success.

How do you handle QA and application security?

Our application development practices start with security and DevOps. We build in security at every step using least privileged access. We ensure your data is encrypted at rest and in transit, and we ensure the APIs are sufficiently locked down to accomplish only what they need to. Our DevOps philosophy is to automate as much as possible. That includes the application development infrastructure and development tools. We automate the deployment of code through CI/CD pipelines to minimize issues with release management.

Business intelligence and analytics

How can I collect the data I need from my applications?

Getting your data from source into a format and location where you can derive actionable insights is the process of extract, transform and load (ETL). Designing ETL processes is a core component of business intelligence modernization.

ETL can be applied to data from many sources, including: telemetry from automated systems or IoT devices, user preferences or demographics, transactional data from line of business systems, purchased or imported data from other systems or a combination of all of these.

How do I get business intelligence from my data?

ETL is the first step to gaining business intelligence from your data. The next step in your data strategy should be to understand what questions to ask in order to derive meaning and insight from the data.

I know what questions to ask, but how can my data answer them?

The next step in your business intelligence process is to analyze your data. Do you have sufficient data in the correct format to answer your questions? You may need to collect more and/or cross reference your data against other sets.

Cloud services

What is the cloud?

The cloud refers to a network of remote servers that store and manage data, applications and services over the internet. It allows users to access and use these resources on-demand, offering flexibility, scalability and reduced reliance on local hardware.

Why use the cloud?

Using the cloud offers many benefits, including:

  1. Scalability: Easily adjust resources based on demand.
  2. Cost efficiency: Pay for what you use, reducing upfront expenses.
  3. Accessibility: Access data and applications from anywhere with an internet connection.
  4. Reliability: Cloud providers offer robust infrastructure and data redundancy.
  5. Collaboration: Enable seamless collaboration among teams, regardless of location.
  6. Backup and recovery: Automatic data backups and recovery options enhance data security.
  7. Innovation: Access to cutting-edge tools and technologies without extensive setup.

What does “as-a-service” mean?

“As-a-service” refers to a cloud computing model where a service or resource is provided over the internet on a subscription basis. This eliminates the need for users to manage or own physical infrastructure, offering convenience, scalability and cost savings. Examples include:

  • Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS): Virtual machines (compute), storage and networking.
  • Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS): Functionality to extend applications in a “serverless” model.
  • Software-as-a-Service (SaaS): Functionality for accomplishing line-of-business tasks, e.g. CRM, ERP, document management, etc.

Which cloud should I use?

That depends on how closely a cloud’s technology stack, services and tooling align with your organization’s operational structure and existing tech stack. An in-depth evaluation of your tech stack and business requirements will lead to an informed decision on the best cloud for your purposes, as all major cloud providers have similar functionality and cost.

Business applications

What are line-of-business applications?

Line-of-business applications are software applications specifically designed to support and streamline the core functions and operations of a particular organization or industry. These applications are tailored to meet the unique needs of an organization’s day-to-day processes, such as customer relationship management (CRM), human resources management (HRM), inventory management, financial tracking and more. They help organizations manage their operations efficiently, enhance productivity and achieve their specific business goals.

Why do we need help implementing business applications?

The differentiator in business applications is how well the application collects, relates, query and views types of core organizational data, and how the application represents, facilitates and expedites the core processes of your organization. Organizations also need to take security, data retention, auditing and communication requirements into account when implementing business applications.

We understand the critical value in leveraging those common features and components to craft agile, flexible and usable applications that free your employees to focus on high value efforts that improve the bottom line.

What is your approach to line-of-business application development?

We will work with you to understand your domain, identify key personas, data models, processes, integrations and business intelligence needs. Armed with this knowledge, we leverage platforms such as Microsoft Power Platform and Force.com to craft lean, efficient systems that fit your specific business needs. This way, we create data models, views, forms and business processes that accurately represent your business.

What happens if business processes change during implementation?

With rapid prototyping, we can clarify and prove the data model, iterating quickly over it without incurring major refactoring and coding costs. When the data model represents your business, we can quickly move into user experience. We will create forms, views, reports, dashboards and processes that ensure data quality, expedite data entry and management tasks and provide relevant business intelligence to the right users at the right time.

How do you help with business intelligence?

We help achieve business intelligence success through automation and standardization of data transfer, messaging and event communication between IT and the other line-of-business systems. This enables agile, efficient processes and robust insights deriving new predictions and a deeper understanding of your business.

How do you help with process automation?

We use business applications to connect data, people and processes, so that you can better serve users and advance business objectives. We first understand the human element of your organization and then build systems that enable success.

AI and machine learning

How will AI affect my business?

It can be hard to understand what AI can or can’t do for your organization and how it can fit into your overall business strategy. It has the potential for massive improvement. But, with those, comes new security concerns or lack of clarity into decision making or algorithmic processes. Maximizing benefits while mitigating risks requires a strategy tied to measurable goals. We have the experience to help you craft this strategy and find the right place for AI in your organization.

What can AI do for me?

AI can significantly impact your business in several ways:

  1. Automation: AI can automate repetitive tasks, boosting efficiency and freeing up time for more strategic work.
  2. Insights: AI analyzes large datasets to provide actionable insights, aiding informed decision-making.
  3. Personalization: AI enables personalized customer experiences, enhancing engagement and satisfaction.
  4. Predictive analytics: AI can forecast trends, helping you anticipate market shifts and customer preferences.
  5. Cost savings: Automation and optimized processes can lead to reduced operational costs over time.
  6. Innovation: AI fosters the development of new products, services, and business models.
  7. Competitive edge: Leveraging AI may give your business an edge in a tech-driven marketplace.

Apprenticeships

Screening

What is the Catalyte screening and what does it do?

The first step to joining any Catalyte apprenticeship is our online screening. The screening discovers a person’s ability to become a top performer in that career pathway with Catalyte. We’ve learned from 20+ years of experience that top performers think, act, behave and react in certain ways. The screening looks for people who display similar patterns, which identifies that they can quickly learn new skills and succeed in their career.

Do I have to take the screening?

Yes. Everyone who wants to join a Catalyte apprenticeship is first required to complete a screening for that career pathway.

Where do I register to take the screening?

You can register to take a screening by clicking the specific apprenticeship link below.

Do I need a college degree to take the screening or join Catalyte?

Catalyte does not take degrees, prior work experience or technical skills into consideration when selecting qualified applicants to join our apprenticeships. However, certain clients may have additional requirements. We will inform you before you apply if an apprenticeship has additional requirements, and what those requirements are.

What are the requirements to apply for a Catalyte apprenticeship?

To participate in an apprenticeship, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have computer proficiency and high-speed/broadband internet access.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or eligible to work in the U.S. for 30 continuous months from the first day of your apprenticeship. Catalyte does not offer visa assistance or sponsorship of any kind.

Can I apply if I have a criminal record?

Yes. However, Catalyte does conduct background checks. Depending on the apprenticeship or client needs, these could be done at the start of the apprenticeship or before someone is hired with a client as a full-time apprentice. Any criminal history will be addressed on a case-by-base basis when you receive an official employment offer. If you have concerns about your ability to pass a background check, please email us at hr@catalyte.io.

How hard is it to get into an apprenticeship?

Depending on the apprenticeship, we identify 7-15% of people who take the screening as having the potential to become top performers within that career pathway.

What happens after I register for the screening?

When you register, Catalyte will immediately email you a username, a single use code, and a link to log into and complete the screening. Make sure to check all inboxes, as some email systems route the initial email to promotions or spam.

Why does it ask me for information that would be on a resume (job experience, education, references)?

We don’t require any specific prior experience. Please complete this section to the best of your ability. This information will help us with future recruiting efforts and help us better understand your background.

How long does the screening take?

It typically takes around two hours to complete the screening.

What can I do to prepare for the screening?

The screening is meant to be taken with little-to-no outside preparation. There are some areas of the screening where knowing high school-level math concepts could be helpful.

It’s best to take the screening on a non-mobile device with the most current version of the Chrome or Firefox browser.

What is on the screening? What types of questions can I expect?

The screening consists of several sections, each intended to measure how you think, react and engage with difficult situations. Questions cover several areas including personality and work styles, mathematics, reading comprehension and logic patterns. Most of the questions are multiple choice, but a few require you to supply very short answers. Questions consist mostly of written English, but some contain some visual elements such as graphs and solid color shapes.

How can I request a reasonable accommodation before taking the screening?

Our screening gives fair and effective consideration to all takers. To ensure equal access for prospective candidates, you may request reasonable accommodations before taking the screening. You can submit a written request and propose accommodations that will help you complete the screening. We will explore whether the proposed or other reasonable accommodations can be made without undue hardship. The availability of any particular accommodation will depend on the circumstances. We may require medical documentation as part of the accommodation process. To submit a reasonable accommodation request, please contact hr@catalyte.io

I realized I need a reasonable accommodation after already starting the screening. What do I do now?

The process for requesting a reasonable accommodation after starting the screening is the same as requesting before starting. You can submit a written request and propose accommodations to hr@catalyte.io. We will explore whether the proposed or other reasonable accommodations can be made without undue hardship. The availability of any particular accommodation will depend on the circumstances. We may require medical documentation as part of the accommodation process. If you need to restart the screening with an accommodation, your previous attempt will not be used to calculate your eligibility for one of our apprenticeships.

I’m having an issue accessing or logging into the screening. What should I do?

If you are having technical issues accessing or logging into our screening, please make sure you are using a non-mobile device (laptop or desktop computer) and using an updated version of Chrome or Firefox. Clear your cache and delete your cookies. If these steps don’t resolve your issue, feel free to email screeningsupport@catalyte.io letting them know what is happening, what you’ve tried, what device and browser you are using, the email on your Catalyte account and any applicable screenshots.

I didn’t receive my code to take the screening. What should I do?

If you are having an issue locating the code to take the screening, please check your Spam or other inbox folders. If you still can’t locate it, please email  screeningsupport@catalyte.io, explain the issue and request assistance.

Do I have to complete the screening all at once?

Some sections of the screening are timed. You must complete each of those sections in one sitting. You can save your progress between each section and return to the screening at a later date using your original login credentials.

Can I take the screening more than once? If so, how often?

Yes. You can register and retake the screening as many times as you want.

Do I have to take a different screening for each apprenticeship?
Yes. You will need to complete the screening for the specific apprenticeship you wish to join.

What can I do to improve my score on the screening?

The screening looks more at how a person thinks or acts, rather than the specific answer(s) they provide to questions or prompts. We’ve found that this means when people retake the screening, their results change very little. There is no one combination of responses on the screening that would result in a better outcome.

Do I need any prior knowledge or skills to take the screening?

No. The screening does not ask questions about your prior knowledge or skills related to the apprenticeship you wish to join. Having a background or education in a specific career pathway will not give you an advantage on the screening.

Who grades the screening? What is that grade based on?

There are no people involved in scoring the screening. It’s not “graded” like a typical test. It evaluates 500+ data points to discover people with the aptitude and attitude to succeed in a chosen career pathway. Catalyte’s screening doesn’t take your job history, education level, existing skill set or demographics into account. It doesn’t care where you’ve been, but where you can go from here.

What happens after I take the screening?

Catalyte sends everyone who completes the screening an email confirming we received their submission. We will contact qualified candidates for an interview as apprenticeship spots become available.

How will I know if I did well on the screening?

Catalyte does not share screening outcomes.

We add individuals with competitive scores to an apprenticeship candidate pool. From that pool, we select members to interview for an upcoming apprenticeship about one-to-two months before that development phase is set to begin.

Interview and selection

How will I know I’m selected for an interview?

If selected for an interview, candidates will get an email inviting them to set up an interview time with a member of our recruiting team, approximately one-to-two months before an apprenticeship is set to begin.

Why do I have to  interview when I just took a screening that showed I’d do well in this apprenticeship?

The purpose of the interview is for you to learn more about us and for us to assess if you will be a good fit for a Catalyte apprenticeship program.

What questions do you ask in the interview?

This interview is conducted similarly to any other job interview. We will ask you to describe scenarios from your past, hypotheticals about how you would react to future job obstacles and why you are applying for this apprenticeship.

Who will the interview be with?

A member of our recruitment team will conduct the interview.

What can I do to prepare for the interview?

Get a good night’s rest. Focus on why you are interested in going into this field and why you believe yourself to be a good fit. It’s also nice to be prepared to use Google Meet with a camera to avoid any potential troubleshooting at the time of the interview.

How long will the interview take?

Interviews take approximately 30 minutes.

How do you make a final selection of who gets accepted in an apprenticeship?

Our recruiting team works with our apprenticeship teams to select candidates who we believe will be most successful in that specific career pathway.

How hard is it to be selected?

We invite about half of those we interview to join an apprenticeship.

What happens if I’m not selected to join an apprenticeship? Will I have a chance to join in the future?

We understand that this is not the news you wanted to hear. If after the interview we do not invite you to join an apprenticeship, you have to wait a year to retake the screening for that career pathway and begin the process again.

Apprenticeship development

Is development in person or remote?

All apprenticeship development sessions are currently fully remote. Depending on client needs, you may be asked to come into an office after you successfully transition to the apprenticeship deployment phase.

Is development a full-time or part-time commitment

Development sessions are a full-time commitment of approximately 40 hours per week during traditional business hours.

Do I need to work while I’m in the development phase of my apprenticeship?

Catalyte apprenticeships are a full-time commitment and require participants to be available during business hours for group learning sessions, assignments, etc. Some participants choose to work nights and/or weekends while in the development phase of their apprenticeship. However, we have found that treating the development phase as your full-time job is the best way to successfully complete it and transition to the apprentice deployment phase.

How much does the apprenticeship cost?

All of our apprenticeships are 100% free. Unlike bootcamps, training providers or schools, we have no tuition or upfront costs. We don’t have income sharing agreements (ISAs) that take a percentage of your hard-earned money.

Will I be paid during the development phase of my apprenticeship?

All apprentices are paid during the development phase. See specific program FAQs for details.

What will I learn during the development phase of my apprenticeship?

You will learn the technical and interpersonal skills needed to succeed in that particular career pathway. Please see specific career pathway FAQs for more details about what you’ll learn in each.

What happens after I complete the development phase of my apprenticeship?

Approximately 95% of people who complete the development phase of our apprenticeships deploy to work on real-world projects at Catalyte or a client. You will work in this full-time role for the duration of your apprenticeship, the length of which varies depending on the career pathway. Apprentices are full-time hourly employees during their deployment phase, and receive benefits including paid holidays and time off, health, vision and dental benefits.

What happens if I’m not deployed as an apprentice at the end of the learning phase?

There are unfortunate occasions where, due to unforeseen economic conditions or a reduction in open positions at a client, not everyone who successfully completes the development phase is deployed as a full-time apprentice. In that situation, Catalyte will help you with the transition and remain in contact should hiring circumstances change.

Apprenticeship deployment

How does a Catalyte apprenticeship work?

For 20+ years, Catalyte has provided opportunities for anybody, regardless of background, to launch new careers. Our apprenticeships offer you the opportunity to be paid while learning new skills and applying them on real-work client projects.

What apprenticeships do you currently offer?

We currently offer apprenticeships in the following disciplines:

Can I live anywhere and participate in an apprenticeship?

To participate in an apprenticeship, you must be a legal resident of one of the following states: Arizona, California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington or Wisconsin.

We are continuing to expand into new states, so please check back for updates.

Participation in a specific client-sponsored apprenticeship could require you to live within a prescribed geographic area.

Will my apprenticeship be remote or will I have to work in an office?

Due to client needs, this will vary. Some apprenticeships are fully remote, while others will require you to come into a local office. This will be clearly communicated to you during the development phase of your apprenticeship.

What will I be doing during my apprenticeship?

Our apprentices apply what they’ve learned during the development phase, while continually adapting to meet the needs of our clients. You should consider the apprenticeship like you would any other job. You will be completing the tasks and responsibilities that come with that job, whether it be software developer, business analyst,  programmatic media buyer or other role.

Is the apprenticeship deployment phase paid?

Yes. During the deployment phase of the apprenticeship, apprentices are full-time hourly employees and receive benefits including paid holidays and time off, health, vision and dental benefits.

Will I be a Catalyte employee during my apprenticeship?

Most apprentices will be employed by Catalyte during their apprenticeship. However, there is the possibility of being hired directly into a client organization for the duration of the apprenticeship. This will be clearly communicated to you during the development phase of your apprenticeship.

How long is the deployment phase of the apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships range from six months to two years, depending on the career pathway and client placement.

What happens at the end of an apprenticeship?

At the end of the apprenticeship, our goal is for apprentices to be hired into full-time positions with our clients or Catalyte. However, we can’t guarantee this will happen. Those who have completed their apprenticeship will be well equipped with the skills and experience to continue in their selected career pathway.

Will I have opportunities to collaborate with others during my apprenticeship?

Absolutely. We provide communication channels (such as Slack and Microsoft Teams) for collaboration, communication and shared learning.
